A Christmas Miracle!
the EIC sends out a very special thanks to the washington post and Ms. Athelia Knight, head of the Young Journalist Development Program, for their very generous donation of $1,000 towards our newspaper. As you all may know, this student run newspaper is in debt and relies solely on fundraisers like the upcoming Talent Show and Faculty Follies to generate capital. Hurricane Nation and the EIC thank the Washington Post for their tireless efforts to help young journalism programs in the area.
Sticking with the Post, here are some of today’s headlines:
- Everyone loves the Wii — even old people
- The U.S. finally approved a pact to attack global warming
- And finally, another twist in the local illegal immigration row

DO YOU PAD? (Your college application, of course.)
OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS I’ve been researching and interviewing Huntingtown students, teachers, and counslers about this nationwide phenomenon in an article to be published in the next edition of Hurricane Nation and potentially in the Calvert Recorder. You will get to hear the intriguing stories of unknown students like Junior Chris Sadowski, who claims membership to 13 different clubs, takes 6APs, and sleeps very little.
WHAT IS PADDING? It goes like this: Lucy wants to get into Harvard. She has the SAT score, but so does everyone else. So in an effort to make herself appear as well rounded as a bouncy ball, Lucy joins hordes of after school activities, clubs, and sports that you can’t get cut from. Most students preliminarily surveyed (unscientifically) engage in this “padding” to some extent — few remain above it all.

Mission.
In an era of transition from print to online media, major news outlets are undergoing rapid transformation.
We too, your humble editors of Huntingtown High School’s nascent Hurricane Nation Online, are experiencing a similar transition. This blog, which our handful of editors will update weekly, is an attempt to expand online interaction with readers. Here you will find the interesting yet often untold stories behind the story coupled with thoughts of stressed, hard working, and over-caffienated teenage writers.
Here is our online domain to reveal to you the hectic world of journalism as best as we can, and your opportunity to weigh in on it. Enjoy.
